De trouwe lezer van mijn blog weet dat ik graag en vaak industriële fotografie doe. Vandaag had ik een buitenkansje: ik bezocht met enkele collega’s het Landschaftpark in Duitsland. Dit is een industrieel complex dat niet meer wordt gebruikt, en nu is opengesteld voor het publiek. In Nederland breken we dat soort ‘oude meuk’ zo snel mogelijk af, maar in Duitsland maken ze dat dus een park. Briljant…!
Het clubje fotografen waarmee we daar waren is allemaal lid van het Master Photographer’s Network. Met zijn allen zijn we bezig een 3-daagse excursie te plannen, compleet met modellen, visagisten, kleding en workshopleiders. Dan zullen we ook in de gelegenheid zijn om hier ‘s avonds te fotograferen. Dan is het park namelijk mooi en kleurrijk verlicht, wat weer allerlei nieuwe mogelijkheden geeft. Die foto’s ziet u tegen die tijd wel hier op mijn blog.
Gisteren moest ik voor een opdracht in Zoetermeer zijn. Na afloop reed ik langs dit restauratieproject: deze flat wordt volledig gestript en gerenoveerd. Wellicht dat het aan het mooie zonlicht lag, maar op de een of andere manier moest ik stoppen en foto’s maken. Dit gebouw raakte mij. Ik vond het mooi.
In dit gebouw zie ik de nederlandse hokjesgeest. Iedereen heeft zijn eigen privé-vakje. Daar mag je alles doen wat je wilt. Je mag de muren behangen, of verven in elke kleur die je maar wilt. We zitten vlak bij elkaar, boven op elkaar opgestapeld. Toch hebben we allemaal onze eigen plek. We zien niks van elkaar, totdat zo’n renovatie ons privé-domein aan de wereld laat zien.
Elk hokje heeft zijn eigen verhaal. Waarschijnlijk waren er in dit gebouw allerlei culturen vertegenwoordigd, en werden er verschillende talen gesproken. Er werd tv gekeken, geslapen, eten gemaakt, ruzie gemaakt, gevreeën, sollicitatiebrieven geschreven, studieboeken gelezen, gedroomd, feestjes gegeven… er werd op allerlei manieren geleefd en beleefd — allemaal privé en verborgen. Tot dat een grote kraan de gevel weghaalde en dat leven aan de wereld liet zien.
Afgelopen vrijdag heb ik een workshop Architectuur fotografie gegeven. Was bijzonder leuk. Architectuur is de kunst waarin we wonen en werken — en Rotterdam is bij uitstek geschikt om dat te fotograferen. Tijdens de workshop heb ik niet veel gefotografeerd, maar vooral de deelnemers geholpen. Maar een week eerder heb ik alvast een rondje gelopen door de stad. Rotterdam verandert voortdurend, dus je moet wel weten wat de nieuwste gebouwen zijn. Hier zijn mijn beelden van die voorverkenning.
Every year I enjoy showing you my best photos from my vacation. I enjoy doing my own photography while on vacation (no client looking over my shoulder…). Just me, the camera, and an amazing landscape. This year we vacationed in Canada, and as you probably know, in Canada there’s an amazing landscape around every corner!
Rest assured, these are not your holiday snaps. You will see no pictures of kids eating ice cream, or pictures of me lying on the beach. What relaxes me is seeing amazing landscapes. Capturing those landscapes is a way of bringing my vacation home with me. At various points throughout the year I look back over those photos and it reminds me of a good and beautiful time!
Route
We started our trip in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That’s really the only city we visited. Sophie has family who live there. From there we drove to Fundy Bay, which has the largest tide-difference in the world: 11 meters difference between high and low tide. We visited Annapolis Royal and saw the first European settlement in Canada, visited Kejimkujik National Park, and then visited Mahone Bay and Lunenburg with it’s colorful houses.
After a brief stay with Sophie’s family again we drove up the Nova Scotia Coast (the most beautiful drive!) to Sydney where we caught the 7hour ferry to Newfoundland. We landed at Port-aux-Basques and then drove to Rocky Harbour in Gros Morne National Park. From there we did a one-day trip to Saint Lunaire-Griquet where we took a boat ride to see whales and icebergs. I had high expectations of seeing the whales, which turned out to be disappointing; I had low expectations of seeing icebergs, but it turned out to be amazing! Funny how that goes…
From there we travelled to Bovavista and English Harbour, where we saw more whales and also visited a Puffin colony. We spent 6 days in Newfoundland, and I thought it was absolutely fantastic.
We then took the ferry back to Sydney, where we stayed with Sophie’s family in Cape Breton for four days. Cape Breton is the northern most top part of Nova Scotia. From there we went back to Halifax. All in all we drove 5400 km.
A couple of observations
Eastern Canada is absolutely beautiful. We visited Western Canada (Vancouver to the Rockies and then back to Vancouver island) 2 years ago (photo’s), and that was fantastic. I had fairly low expectations of Nova Scotia — you don’t hear much about that part of Canada. But I can tell you the coastline was amazing. The drive from Halifax to Sydney is as beautiful as the Pacific Coastal Highway in California. There are endless beautiful beaches, totally empty. Of course the water is chilly, so there’s no one in the water.
The roads are long and empty. Two lanes, and often you will not see another car for miles. Sophie’s behind started disliking the many potholes after a while; many of the roads are in urgent need of repair. We even drove over a few roads that had a sign: ‘the department of fishery no longer supports this road’.
You can drive for miles and miles before you see a gas station. You better make sure you have at least half a tank of gas when you pass one, because the next gas station could be a while!
And the next restaurant or supermarket might take even longer. Sophie and I are not sure what Canadians eat, but more than a few times we were just amazed to discover we had driven for miles and miles before we found a store, only to see endless rows of snacks and junk food.
There are more churches than gas stations and restaurants — that’s for sure! Every few miles you will pass a cute little white church. Most of them look like they haven’t been used in years. I photographed a few, but after a while you just give up.
I may have seen a lot of churches, but I never saw any moose. Canadians will be quick to tell you that is a good thing: moose are back animals and an accident with a moose can be deadly (not for the moose, but for the human). There are warning signs for moose everywhere. I wanted to see one, but never did.
Canadians are incredibly friendly and helpful and talkative. They will engage you in conversation quickly and easily. You will find out lots of private details that a European might not even share after you had been friends for a decade. I met a gentleman on the boat from Sydney to Port-aux-Basques. Within 5 minutes I had heard his whole life story, including the fact that he had just sold his business in Thailand for 10 million dollars and was now returning home to build his own property in Deer Lake, just ‘up on the hill behind the power-station’.
And then there is the emptiness and the quietness. There is a picture in this set of nothing but pebbles and quiet waves on a misty beach (English Harbour-307). It was there that I realized I found the rest I so craved on this holiday.

So Sophie and I are currently vacationing in Nova Scotia, Canada. We are staying with my sister in law and her husband. They run a number of AirBnB residences. I photographed two spaces for them. I like doing interior architectural photography. You will see a slightly different editing style between the first and the second set. I’m curious which one you like better: the editing style of the first or the second set?
Funny thing: my sister-in-law posted the images to AirBnB, and the next morning the following month was almost fully booked up! Which just goes to show that good images make ALL the difference!
Here are the images I delivered to them. Why am I showing you ALL the images I gave them? Because anyone can take one or two good images. I like to show you that a professional photographer delivers a full set of images, all good and consistent in style.
And here are the images of the second set. My sister-in-law asked me to go for a softer retouch of these images, as that fits this space more. So you may observe a (subtle) differences between the images above and the ones below.

Al enige tijd fotografeer ik met enige regelmaat voor het NBC (Nieuwegein Business Center). Dit is een grote en mooie locatie voor allerlei evenementen. Het NBC is centraal gelegen, goed bereikbaar en biedt echt vele mogelijkheden voor bedrijven en organisaties die een mooi evenement willen organiseren. Ik ben altijd onder de indruk van het enthousiasme en de toewijding van de mensen van het NBC: ze zijn bevlogen en werken met hart en ziel voor hun klanten. Daarom ervaar ik het dan ook als een eer om hun fotograaf te mogen zijn!
Wat niet iedereen weet, is dat het NBC eigenlijk twee locaties heeft. Naast het NBC zelf is er nog Green Village. Dit is een oude boerderij, landelijk gelegen, een paar honderd meter achter het NBC zelf. Nou ja, oud… recentelijk is dit complex helemaal gerenoveerd en gemoderniseerd. Het was al niet lelijk, maar nu is het echt een schitterende locatie geworden. Ik mocht, direct na de renovatie, de reclame foto’s maken.
We wilden inde fotografie laten zien hoe mooi het licht zijn rol speelt in het vernieuwde Green Village. Daarom begonnen we rond twee uur, en zijn we door gegaan tot 10 uur. U ziet op de foto’s hie het karakter van de verschillende ruimtes steeds subtiel veranderd. Ik vond dit zeer charmant. De medewerking met de staf van Green Village was zoals altijd voortreffelijk: steeds als ik een ruimte had gefotografeerd, veranderden zij de zaal opstelling, zodat u een indruk krijgt van de mogelijkheden. Het vernieuwde Green Village heeft nu twee grote zalen en daarmee is de capaciteit aanzienlijk verhoogt.

Ik mocht ook de medewerkers van Green Village opnieuw op de foto zetten. Dit had ik al eerder gedaan, maar omdat het NBC volkomen vernieuwd is passen deze foto’s niet meer. Belangrijkste verschil met de vorige foto’s is dat ik de medewerkers nu ‘in actie’ moest fotograferen. Hier zijn de leukste foto’s – vind ik zelf.
Op dit moment ben ik bezig een opdracht uit te voeren voor een bedrijf dat actief is op allerlei vlakken in logistiek en vervoer. Veel van hun werk richt zich op de Rotterdamse haven. Nu zijn ze bezig een nieuwe website te bouwen. Hierbij kwamen ze erachter dat ze eigenlijk weinig goed beeld hadden. En dus kreeg ik de opdracht dat te verzamelen. Ik heb hun een zogenaamde ‘rijdag’ aangeboden: ik rijd een hele dag rond, op zoek naar de juiste beelden.
Ik kom graag en vaak in de Rotterdamse haven. Ik zou zeggen dat ik de haven redelijk goed ken. Precies weet waar ik wel en niet kan komen met mijn auto. En als de zon dan een beetje schijnt… dan geniet ik volop.
Het leverde ook een mooie collectie van zo’n 100 foto’s op. De klant was heel blij! Je bent natuurlijk altijd afhankelijk van een stukje geluk: zie ik iets boeiends? Maar in de haven van Rotterdam komt dat altijd wel goed… klik op de beelden om ze groter te zien.

Hieronder een paar voorbeelden van wat recente interieurfotografie. Voor dit accountantskantoor heb ik al enkele malen portretfoto’s mogen maken. Maar nu was hun kantoor verbouwd en dat wilden ze graag op de foto. Lekker sfeervol en aantrekkelijk voor nieuw personeel — want ze zijn altijd op zoek naar nieuwe mensen.
We spraken een vrijdagmiddag af, zodat ik aan het eind van de dag ook nog even wat foto’s van de vrijdagmiddagborrel kon maken. De bedoeling was dat op sommige foto’s wel mensen in beeld waren, maar niet herkenbaar. De foto’s mochten ook een beetje ‘artsy’ zijn. Ik heb ze overigens naast de ‘artsy’ foto’s de beelden in een wat meer standaardbewerking geleverd. Omdat het fijn is als je wat keuze hebt!
Tijdens mijn vakantie in Engeland verbleven we ook een aantal dagen bij mijn schoonzus en zwager. Ze wonen op het platteland van het schitterende Devon. In het veld naast hun huis werd geoogst. Het was tegen het vallen van de avond, en ik zag daarin een mooie gelegenheid om wat mooie foto’s te maken van een aspect van onze wereld waar ik niet zo vaak kom: de agrarische sector.
Het zal wel komen omdat ik in Rotterdam woon. Ik ben zeer regelmatig te vinden in de haven of in een of andere fabrieksloods. Maar voor opdrachten in de agrarische sector wordt ik niet zo vaak benaderd. Wel jammer…
Ik vertel even wat over wat ik zag. De boer, die compleet conform verwachting Bill heette, vond het erg leuk dat die Dutchman foto’s wilde maken. In het veld was een jong hert, dat waarschijnlijk niet in staat was gebleken met zijn moeder mee te gaan in de sprong over een hek. Bill was ongerust over de oogst; was de tarwe droog genoeg. De machinist van de Combine-Harvester had een klein apparaatje bij zich om dat te meten. Helaas; de tarwe bleek nog veels te vochtig. In de laatste foto zie je de machinist de gemalen tarwe uit het apparaatje blazen.
Ik vond het zeer boeiend om eens mee te maken. Partijen die mij een opdracht willen geven om mooie beelden te maken in de agrarische sector zijn hartelijk welkom! 🙂

I would like to show you my favourite spot on this earth. No, I haven’t seen everything yet, and yes, I could wait with choosing my favourite spot until I had ‘seen it all’. But then again, I haven’t seen all the women of this world, and yet I choose one — and that’s worked out pretty good for me so far (we just celebrated our 26th anniversary). So yes, I have a favourite spot. It’s a spot where I feel completely at home and at rest.
My favourite spot is called Crackington Haven and can be found on the rocky north-cast of Cornwall (that’s the peninsula that sticks out into the Atlantic in South-west England). Crackington is not even a village; it’s just a few houses with a small beach between two enormous cliffs. At night the sun sets in perfect view; the waves can be enormous; there are wonderful rock pools with all kinds of sea life in them, and the water is so cold. Sophie’s family had a small cabin here and so she spent her summers on this beach. Naturally it was one of the first places I had to see when we first got to know each other, and for me too it was love at first side.
Our most recent holiday was in Cornwall and of course we spent a number of days at Crackington. It had been a few years since our last visit, but I’m happy to say beyond a few minor improvements it hadn’t changed much!
Crackington is also meaningful place for Sophie’s family. After her Dad died we scattered his ashes on the high cliff overlooking Crackington. Sophie and I have decided we each want our ashes to be scattered here as well. Sorry of that sounds a bit gruesome, but there is something deeply peaceful about ‘knowing the place’, and having a sense of belonging and peace with that.
On this blog I like showing my best and my favourite photo’s. Crackington never ceases to amaze me in how she can look. I took a ton of photo’s there this summer. Here are some of my favourites.
